WHAT IS AN ORIENTATION AND WHY IS IT MANDATORY?

Orientation is a free, 30-minute session for humans only (no dogs) and is required as your first step. It gives us a chance to get to know you, walk you through how our training system works, and help you choose the best starting point based on your dog’s age, temperament, and goals. You’ll also learn what to expect in class, how to use rewards effectively, and how to set your dog up for long-term success.

Orientation ensures you walk into your first session informed, prepared, and confident - so you and your dog can get the most out of every class. After Orientation, you’ll know how to schedule classes, purchase packages, and begin your training journey.

NOTE: If you book an Evaluation, you do not need to attend Orientation. If it is not possible for you to come in to the gym, we can accomodate your Orientation via phone call.

WHAT IS AN EVALUATION AND WHY WOULD I NEED IT?

Unlike Orientation, an Evaluation is not free — it’s a 30-minute, one-on-one session with your dog and costs $25. It’s designed to assess behavior, training history, and placement for group classes. Evaluations are ideal if your dog has prior training, shows signs of reactivity or anxiety, or if you're interested in advanced programs like agility or therapy work.

A certified trainer will observe how your dog responds to basic commands and distractions to recommend the right starting point — so your dog skips what they already know and isn’t rushed into something too advanced. Please bring current vaccination records. After the session, you'll receive personalized class or training recommendations.

NOTE: If you are the owner of a new puppy (<4 months old), you do not need to book an Evaluation.

what is clicker training?

A clicker is a simple tool - a small noisemaker that makes a distinct clicking sound when pressed - but it’s incredibly effective when it comes to training. The idea behind clicker training is that the sound of the click tells your dog “Yes, that’s exactly what I wanted!” in a way that’s faster and clearer than using your voice. Because the click is unique and consistent, dogs pick up on it quickly.

When you follow the click with a reward (like a treat), your dog learns to associate the sound with something positive, and starts trying to repeat the behavior that earned it. This is especially helpful when teaching new behaviors, because dogs only have about a 1.6-second window to link an action to a result. If you miss that window, they might think they’re being rewarded for something else entirely - like sniffing the ground instead of sitting.

The clicker helps you mark the right moment, which gives your dog better feedback and helps speed up the learning process.

Can my dog participate in group classes

We like a safe and happy environment. All dogs must be fully vaccinated (Rabies, Distemper/DHPP, Bordetella), healthy and social with both humans and other dogs to enroll in group classes (if you need us to define “social,” chances are your dog is not). If your dog doesn’t play well with others, you can enroll in private lessons. Dogs displaying aggressive behavior during ANY class will be asked to leave. If you have questions regarding this policy please speak to one of our trainers.

How do classes work at Zoom Room Clifton Park?

Most clients begin with Basic Manners and progress through a structured Levels system. In group classes, you and your dog work at your own pace - there are no fixed timelines. When your instructor sees that you’ve mastered the necessary skills at your current level, you’ll be invited to advance to the next. Everyone in class is working on the same level of skills, so you’ll never feel behind or out of sync. You can attend as often as you like, or skip a week if life gets busy - your progress moves with you.

In addition to group classes, we offer Workshops - focused courses that meet at the same time each week for a set number of sessions (typically three or six). These are designed for deeper skill-building and follow a sequential format, so attendance at each session is required. Some workshops, especially advanced ones, may have prerequisites.

For more personalized support, private training is available in all disciplines - from obedience to agility to reactivity. These one-on-one sessions are tailored to your dog’s specific needs and don’t require an Orientation or Evaluation to get started. Private training is also available for two dogs from the same household.

All programs are led by certified trainers and use positive reinforcement methods to build real-world skills and strengthen the bond between you and your dog.

What Kind of puppy classes do you offer?

We offer a full range of puppy classes designed to build confidence, social skills, and good behavior from the start - all using positive reinforcement in our climate-controlled indoor gym.

  • Puppy Preschool (2-4 months): Early socialization, housebreaking tips, crate training, nipping prevention, and basic obedience in a safe, age-appropriate environment.
  • Puppy + (4-8months): Builds on the basics with sit, stay, come, polite greetings, and leash skills.
  • Puppy Agility (4-8 months): Gentle intro to agility equipment to build body awareness, focus, and confidence.
  • Puppy Playgroups (4-8 months): Supervised play to develop healthy social habits with both dogs and humans.

All classes are led by certified trainers and tailored to your puppy’s age and ability. Age-appropriate vaccinations required to attend.

Will you help me house break my Puppy?

Yes - we cover housebreaking as part of our Puppy Preschool program. You’ll learn how to create and follow a consistent plan to set your puppy up for success at home. While we don’t offer house calls, everything you need to know will be covered in our puppy preschool class.

MY PUPPY DOESN’T HAVE ALL ITS SHOTS, ISN’T THAT DANGEROUS?

We understand your concern, and our Puppy Preschool program was designed with that very question in mind.

While your puppy may not yet have all of its vaccinations, we’ve put strict safety and sanitation protocols in place to ensure a clean, healthy environment. Our facility and equipment are thoroughly sanitized with veterinary-grade disinfectants (Sani-Plex 128M) before every class.

All adult dogs at the Zoom Room must have written proof of full vaccinations (Rabies, Distemper/DHPP, Bordetella), and we accept only puppies with age-appropriate vaccinations. Puppies in our program must not have visited dog parks or daycares, and they are supervised at all times by a qualified dog trainer.

We believe early socialization is essential to a puppy’s development, and we go to great lengths to make that experience as safe as possible.

I'm Ready! How Do I get started?

Your first step is to book either a free Orientation (without your dog) or a $25 Evaluation (with your dog) and create an account.

Orientation is ideal for new owners of puppies and those owners who are new to obedience training, while Evaluations are recommended if your dog is reactive, you're interested in agility or advanced training, or you’re unsure where to begin.

After your first visit, you can sign up for any of our flexible group classes or private training programs - all designed to let your dog progress at their own pace.

Now that you’re logged in, you can go to your preferred location’s page to see the current schedule. You can sign up for an Orientation or any other offerings there. On the location’s page, you can also book an appointment for private training or an Evaluation.
